So, I was devastated. But it was the last straw, and I was determined to teach Linda a real lesson.
So, I got on the phone with the bakery. Turns out, they had a backup cake — not as elaborate, but still elegant, three tiers, and available if I picked it up early. I ordered it under my own name and kept the entire thing a secret, even from Alex. I wanted Linda to think she had ruined the wedding, only to watch her smug face collapse.
The next morning, before heading to the venue, I dropped off the new cake with the caterers and gave them one very specific instruction: do not bring it out until I say so.
At the reception, the time for the cake cutting came. Guests started murmuring because… there was no cake in sight. Linda, sitting front and center, smirked like a queen on her throne. She leaned over to one of her friends and said loudly enough for people nearby to hear:
“Guess they couldn’t afford another one.”
Perfect. She’d just handed me the opening.
I took the mic. “Before we cut the cake, I just want to thank everyone who’s here to celebrate love. And while we’re at it, I’d also like to thank my future mother-in-law for the… taste test she and her friends conducted yesterday. They ate the $1000 wedding cake we had ordered.”
The room gasped. Heads turned to Linda. She froze, her smug grin cracking.
I continued, “But don’t worry, we made sure you’d all still get to enjoy a cake tonight. One that’s just as sweet — though not nearly as bitter.”
Right on cue, the caterers rolled out the brand-new cake, candles sparkling. The room erupted in applause, and guests started laughing and whispering about Linda’s stunt.
Linda’s face went crimson. She sputtered, “That’s not true!” But crumbs don’t lie, and her friends weren’t about to jump in and save her.
The best part? My father-in-law later pulled me aside and handed me an envelope. He said, “I’m sorry about her. This is from me — for handling her with grace.” Inside was a check that more than covered both cakes.
Linda learned real quick that her sabotage didn’t ruin anything — it just exposed her. And Alex? He kissed me in front of everyone and said, “That’s why I’m marrying you.”
